Thread: Rick's Rides, Type 2 Bus / New Beetle.

Rick's Rides, Type 2 Bus / New Beetle.

I put a pic of each in the introduce yourself thread but i'll go into a bit more detail about me and mine here, i've been driving for 25 years and always had Landrovers or Fords plus i had a Jag once, I always had a caravan which i towed with the Landy but always wanted a camper, a mate of mine has a 66 split but i never really took much notice of it, anyway i decided early last year to go with a complete change of tack and get rid of the Landy and caravan as i was using it less and i only used it once the previous year, i didn't know what i wanted until i saw "one man and his campervan" in February so i decided to get one of them there baywindows.... i stupidly thought they were old therefore cheap....... anyway i joined thelatebay forum got advice learned what not to buy and what was best and because i didn't want rust or a hidden bodge i decided to import from California, i got contact with a guy called John and he offered me the van - it was a bit more than i wanted to pay but once i found out it was a rare model i thought sod it... it's a 1978 champagne edition 2 berlin deluxe westfalia. i paid for it and got it shipped over and it landed in may, i had a mad rush getting it tidy and mot'd for camperjam but i made it, if it interests you there are loads of videos on my signature from day one although a lot of them are random because some were for reference only.
First pic i saw of it

    Leaving San Fransisco

    Landed in Felixstowe

This was day one on my drive

This was the first go at cutting it back from sun fade

The first pass at cutting the van - done by hand

I roughly touched up the primered areas with a rattle can

    Looking good

    Badged up

Currently inside in storage being tidied up for this year

All the glass is out having new seals and chrome

Engine is partly stripped at the moment i'm working on missing tinware and fully servicing and replacing parts, I'll update more on the van if you're interested as i get to it, this is a very shortened thread belive me!

Now the Beetle, i saw it last week (Thursday) whilst walking in Hednesford it was a p/x to clear up for £1990 i asked for a p/x on my shagged out Fiesta and they offered me £500 against it,(sold it last night for £825) i declined and said how much for cash they said £1900, i left £100 deposit went for a test drive on Saturday all good took home. It's a 2 litre Auto with winter pack it's got full service history from Vw in willenhall, i rang them today and they confirm it's been serviced from new by them it's done 95,000 miles and was previously on plate V3 GAH it's got a bit of damage down the passenger side and the wheels are scabby but i'll sort it, the engine check light is on all the time but they say they will sort it (not on during test - came on when on way home) tonight the esp light came on but i cleared that one so fingers crossed i haven't got gremlins.....the radio volume plays up...dicky connection....the dash dimmer is the same....other than that all seems fine apart from the fuel economy and the price of road tax (£143 today for 6 months...£260 for 12!) anyway here's a few more pics.
    Rear end

    Front

    Side

    Cracked grill - easy fix

Dent in sill - not so easy

Scuff on side - and an ugly bloke!

That's it for now.....cheers chaps and chappesses. Rick

As mentioned above i had the rubbers done yesterday, the rubber in California bakes to chalk and the previous owner over there decided black mastic was a good fix....the Champagnes have a chrome insert and these had been covered with the stuff, i cut the rubbers out and got brand new German rubbers and metal inserts

sorry for late reply didn't see post, took 7 hours 'cos towbar on beetle requires taking off wheels, arch liners rear wings and splitting the bumpers.... the towbar companies will not fit them - i rang them and they said 12 hours labour.
