What is the best value canon eos for the money...

I am thinking about buying a second hand digital slr camera and fancy one of the Canon range, As the title says what do people think is the best value for money in the Canon range... I will never be a pro user just fancy something that is "capable" of producing some decent pics. cheers.

any of these would produce good pics, obviously the 550 & 650 digit ones are newer than the 500 & 600 versions...

    500D
    550D
    600D
    650D
    1000D
40D older but awesome bit of kit..

If you fancy splashing a little more cash then the 7D is a good buy.

Plenty of different models to look at then....

I think the 550D looks like it is a good buy and is within my price range, Just had a mooch around on E-bay there are loads of them on there some with extra lenses. Are there any obvious things to look for when buying secondhand... or just the general condition as i would imagine they don't like being knocked about to much.

High Shutter counts could cause issues in the future although the 550D range shouldn't suffer too badly as they won't be used by pro's who fire off 3k + each session... you generally find if the camera doesn't look worn then it is in good condition...

If you're collecting the camera remove the lens and power it up. point it to a light source (the sky) and look through it, you'll see how clean it is this way (black dots will be present if it's dirty) generally it costs around £90-£150 to service a camera

open the battery tray and make sure there is no sign of rust in there from a leaking battery.

fit a lens to it and make sure its smooth... (should be tight whatsoever)

Thanks for the info guys, I will be on the look out for one but I think it will have to be with collection distance so I can give it the "Jon" check over... Thanks again gents.
