Mk4 recaro cover removal-for proper cleaning

Hi everyone iv been looking for a guide to this for a while and couldn't find anything so thought it try my hand at doing my own, so here goes...

Tools needed
.screwdriver (Philips)
.hands
.pliers

First things first remove the seat from your car
Then remove the rear panel from the back of the seat with net pocket attached
(This has to be squeezed together to u do 2 clips at the bottom-do not pull or they will break like mine did the first time)

Rear of seat after removing back panel

What you clip will look like if pulled

Next up is removing the fabric, the fabric is pretty much wrapped around to the rear of the seat and then hooked around bendable metal hooks to keep it in place.
These need to be bend out and the fabric can be taken off.

The bendable metal clips and in the second pic the hooks bent out and the green clip can also be seen.

Right now starts the tricky bit
If you have heated seats be careful not to tug on any wires that run through the seats.
These wires can be removed from the seat so that you can manoeuvre around them.
The front part of the fabric is held onto the seat by rods of either plastic or metal and tiny little split rings that are abit of a bugger to open.
Do not be tempted to pull on these as it will rip the metal rods out of the foam.... And we don't want that.

These pics show small linear holes in the foam where the metal rods run through the foam

This pic shows the plastic bars that the split rings loop through there is quite a few of them

Once all these are off its just a matter of pulling the cover up over the headrest holes and showing it in a cool wash

Now if your like me and leave the open split rings on the side in a little tub and your mother decides she is going to throw them in the bin, your going to need something to replace them, I choose some pretty stiff garden wire and looped it through twisted and snipped the ends off

This took me about 40 minutes to pull off and a 30 minute wash, left over a clothes horse by a radiator over night and it was dry
The only true way of cleaning your seats...

P.s remove these metal and plastic rods from the seat cover unless you want to kill your washing machine

Re: Mk4 recaro cover removal-for proper cleaning

Have done the back seats Tuesday night. Slightly different to remove off the drop down backs but the bases were very easy to do. Will be using Danparker297 write up to remove the front covers. The drop down backs are held in by hard plastic strips stitched into the fabric edges. The plastic strips seat in a metal grove around the full length of the backs.

1. With the solid side facing upward and using a strong blunt tool, slide the tool between the solid back and plastic strip and leaver the tool down 45 degrees. This will bend open the metal grove enough to pull the plastic strip out. Once removed tap the metal edge back ready to reinsert the plastic strip when refitting the fabric.
2. The fabric is held in the foam with metal strips. These can be remove from the foam by squeezing the foam to release the hooked end of the strips (don't pull as the foam will tear).
3. Once the fabric is free, carefully slid the strips out of the fabric and wash.
4. To refit use the reverse method.

Bottom seats are fitted to the metal cage by similar plastic strips in the fabric but are tucked under the cage and easily come out. The metal strips are fixed to the foam the same as the backs.

The seat covers have come up and look as new.
