Thread: Cut to speed limit on A500 - Stoke-on-Trent

    Cut to speed limit on A500 - Stoke-on-Trent

    THE 70mph speed limit is set to be cut on part of the A500 after six deaths in four years.

    Highways Agency (HA) managers are looking at measures to improve safety on the D-road between Hanford roundabout and Junction 15 of the M6.

    Measures include cutting the speed limit to 50mph, installing cats' eyes and better lighting, and using speed cameras.

    The lay-by near the Hanchurch roundabout has already been closed off after four of the six victims died after crashing into parked lorries.

    Now HA managers must consult on their safety proposals as they look for cash for the work.

    It is hoped some of the improvements can be carried out before March.

    HA asset development manager Victoria Meikle said: "It was identified in 2010 that there was an issue with the accident rate on this section of the A500 between these two roundabouts.

    "A review has led to a number of recommendations. These include reducing the speed limit, improving signage and lineage, the provision of speed enforcement cameras and bend warning signs.

    "We are looking for funding so we are able to deliver this scheme."

    Fatal crashes since 2007 include:

    Kevin Dunne, aged 42, of Lightwood, whose Jaguar X-Type hit a barrier and a parked lorry on February 16, 2007;

    Driver Ian Lewkowicz, of Hanford, and his 16-year-old passenger Hayley Bates, of Biddulph, pictured, who were both killed when Mr Lewkowicz's sports car slid into a lorry parked in the same lay-by on September 22, 2010;

    Joshua Kirkham, aged 20, of Blackbrook, who crashed into a parked lorry in the same lay-by on August 16 this year.

    Stephen Bradbeer, aged 36, of Fenton, and 66-year-old David Tivey, of Burton, have also died on the same stretch in separate motorbike crashes since 2008.

    North Staffordshire coroner Ian Smith this week ruled that Hayley had been unlawfully killed after 26-year-old Mr Lewkowicz drove "ridiculously fast" in torrential rain.

    Sergeant Adrian Webb, of Staffordshire Police, who led the investigation into last September's fatal accident, said: "We've seen more accidents on that particular stretch, and going in that particular direction, than any other part of the A500. It has caused me some concern. I would like to see that speed limit reduced."

    i know for a fact if they dont put speed cameras in then people will still drive at 70mph down there. I used to do that stretch of road every week and ive never had an issue the only place that is a bit dodgy is the laybys by the end roundabout.

    Cutting the speed will make little difference - its idiots who drive ignoring the weather conditions that are the real problem.

    exactly... I've driven round that piece of road at 70mph and it felt like any other slight left hand to right hand bend... nothing out of the ordinary there...

    Even at night without any lights its no problem to drive... even in the wet 70mph still feels safe for that road...

    cant understand why they need to reduce it, no harm in trying but all of the deaths were because of driver error and speeding in the wet

    The speed limit is fine, even in the wet. The problem is standing water and really really poor lighting.

    Can't say for sure but I'm pretty certain the accidents above we're caused by people exceeding 70mph probably in poor conditions.

    Perhaps Dan would like to input on this seen as he was lucky to be alive after crashing into the layby years ago. Bet excess speed was a factor then too?
