    Audi R18

What you see here is Audi’s answer in defending their championship streak for the 2011 Le Mans 24hour endurance race. Like rival Peugeot, the R18 will be a closed-cockpit racer. This magnificent black beast was launched not too long ago in Ingolstadt.

According to Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, “In the future, aerodynamic efficiency will be even more important at Le Mans than it was in the past.” “A closed car has clear advantages in this respect. Our computer simulations have been confirmed in the wind tunnel and during initial track tests.”

In line with new Le Mans rules aimed to achieve a substantial reduction of engine power, this LMP1 competitor will feature a 3.4-litre V6 TDI engine compared to the V12 and V10 featured in the R10 and R15. According to Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport “From our point of view, the TDI continues to be the most efficient technology. There are good reasons why the share of TDI units among Audi’s production models is as high as it is.”

During the press release, it is said that the LED daytime running lights form the shape of a “1”, inspired by Audi’s historic brand logo.

Even so, the R18 will not see the race track at Sebring. Instead, it is scheduled to debut at the Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours in May next year, followed by the Le Mans 24, Imola 6, Silverstone 6, Road Atlanta’s Petit Le Mans and China 6 hours. Until then, the R15 will continue to shoulder-on that role.
