Thread: vr6 temp always on half ? is this normal.

  1. #1

vr6 temp always on half ? is this normal.

I have been driving my vr6 now since summer, but the cooling temp reading always puts me off!! 90 all the time while driving.(even when I picked it up from Hertfordshire 4 hr drive non stop back to stoke never missed a beat.) I always switch the oil temp on the computer to keep a eye but even that is reading fine. (never gets to a stupid temp) and also one of the two fans kicks in when slightly above half reading, and the other spins on idle or its the draft off the main fan? IS THIS NORMAL? AS MANY PEOPLE SAY ITS FINE THATS HOW THEY RUN???? also to add no head gasket signs heaters work hot and cold as they should, air con works as it should..... and from engine start after about 10mins-15mins stationary the temp hits half way but never goes over... Am I just being stupid or is this how these engines run? Any suggestions, cheers peeps.

That's how all engines run... Every car I've had sits around the half way point when running... although the caddy was always at max due to the rad leak!

Ditto, only the Golf changes dependent on ambient temperature because of how open the front end is. On a long run in this weather the water temp shows lower than it would in summer. But Passat, Octavia, Arosa and Polo all do/did the same.

That's completely normal for all cars who's cooling systems are in fine fettle
Stop worrying about it, only time to show concern is when it raises above the norm

On all modern VAG cars with some electronics in them they use a temperature gauge that tells porkies to a certain extent. It really is only an indicator. As long as the engine has reached around 75 degrees and doesn't go above 100 it will show 90 on the temperature gauge.
Looking at what the actual engine temperature does against the gauge reading on the Passat and Audi I have now when it started moving at 50 the engine was around 50 degrees. At 60 it was still reasonably accurate. From then on the gauge would rise in an increasing innacurate way so that around 75 degrees engine temp it would show 90 on the gauge.
They do this to stop people fretting about why the car is a little bit cooler or a little bit hotter than it has been.
    It's a good idea really.
On the wifes Yaris it doesn't even have a temperature gauge just a blue light that goes out a about 55 degrees and a red light that comes on when it gets too hot.

Thanks for the replies, cheers made me feel better and I can now keep my eye off the gauge and enjoy driving it :-)
I thought it was a problem because all the other cars I have had never went to that sort of temp only on a hot day...
and ive always experienced temp gauges going up and down depending on the drive ie:- around town or at a cruising speed on the motorway,
    Thanks again anyway...

I've got a VR6 Sharan and it ran at exactly half the temp gauge. However after a recent water leak (thermostat housing !) I replaced the Thermostat and it now runs a fraction over this....Can;t say as I've ever checked the oil temp....I'll see if I can find this and report back...Temp always stays steady though...even going round the Safari Park on Saturday when it was B****y hot.
