    Strange noise

Hi all went out last night and when i started the golf up its a gti 1.8 turbo it was making a weird noise like a vacuum cleaner i turned the car off and started it up again and the noise went then a couple of hours later it did it again. I went to the car this morning started it up about 5 times and it was fine then my wife took my daughter to school and it was fine but when she went to work it did it again. Any ideas what it could be i was thinking the starter motor could be sticking????

yeah i get the starter motor overrun/squeel. bit annoying but nowt to panic about fixing. must be a fairly common problem with mk4's the guy across the road from me, his 1.6 does the same!

Secondary air pump is noisy but can be quietened down by adding new bolts and squeezing the gap together.

    Re: Strange noise

Is it a later spec car, i.e 2001+?

Sounds like the secondary air injection (SAI) system is failing.
