Thread: Flat Battery - Drain

    Flat Battery - Drain

A few months ago I went away for a week and came back to a flat battery.... Tonight I just got back from a few days away and yet again I had a flat battery....

the alarm didn't look like it had been tripped in anyway... and the only thing left to an "on" position in the car was the heated mirror switch.....

    Ideas anyone ????

still got issues... it was flat after one day of not using it over the weekend.

    wiring diagram

I've taken a feed it directly from the battery.... as per the instructions (Yellow wire) if you don't it looses its memory every time you turn the ignition off

Currently I'm running without any head unit now and so far so good with battery power

    anyone?

    Re: Flat Battery - Drain

This is what i have found before on some audio units.

VW stereo connector blocks have 5v power cables and some extra 12v power cables in some cars. Some aftermarket stereo looms have all the pins connected. Common thing is the 12v remote on cable (what normaly goes to your amps) goes into the multi block where there is already a powered cable. I have found sometimes when the stereo is turned off the power cable back feeds into the head unit and brains the battery.

I do have a tester you put in place of the fuse and it tells you the current draw of the circuit. Could try it on the stereo if you think it's that?

Not 100% without checking specific wiring diagrams for your car but i think the Mk5 Golf has only permanent 12v feed and is switched on/off via CAN?

If it does how does the Alpine unit deal with it?

    Re: Flat Battery - Drain

Kit for my Passat had a canbus module built into the adapter loom which gave a ignition output.

If you are turning the stereo on and off from the power button then that might explain the drain as the stereo will be powered up but not doing anything.

    Re: Flat Battery - Drain

Is it a battery drain or just a weak battery?

You need an ammeter (or clamp meter) to check the drain while everything is supposedly switched off, then remove each fuse to see which circuit reduces/stops the current draw. You will get a minimal current draw of about 0.2-0.4 amps on the system.
