How to - MK4 Golf Battery Replacement guide

Just had the pleasure of changing the battery on the golf for the first time, thought it was gonna be a quick and easy job but my god it was tricky! its taken me the best part of 45 mins to swap it over! i also have the winter cover on my battery too which is a real pain to work with.

    1. The battery terminals are the round bits between numbers 2 and 4 (+ positive terminal) and 1 and 3 (- negative terminal), the bits the wires clamp round!
    2. When disconnecting a battery always start with the (-) negative terminal, this then isolates the battery from the rest of the car. For example if you were to undo the positive terminal first and whilst doing so your spanner/ratchet touches a metal part of the car whilst also touching the (+) positive terminal on the battery then sparks will definately fly! This happens because the whole of the car body, engine etc is all (-) negative and touching it whilst also touching the positive terminal will result in a direct short out. On the other hand when you undo the negative terminal first, if you touch the car with the other end of the spanner then nothing will happen as both ends are negative and nothing shorts out. Hope that makes sense, its where most people go wrong and cause sparks and blown fuses etc.
    3. My advice for you is to loosen number 3 first, once loose you should then be able to wiggle the wire and clamp bit about and pull it off the battery terminal. As far as I know number 1 can be left done up as that only releases the wire from the clamp.
    4. Next up will be number 2, remove the nut, this will allow you to disconnect the bus bar (the flat metal strip between the nut and the fuse bit on top of the battery) from the battery terminal. From memory the whole fuse box on top of the battery can now be unclipped and swung up and over the battery (towards the back of the car) and out of the way.
    5. Now the clamp round the positive terminal can be removed by loosening number 4.
    6. Now as far as I can remember everything should now be disconnected from the battery.
    7. The battery is held into the car by a method of clamping it to the car by its base. You will find one side of the battery (I think its the side nearest the back of the car) will be hooked under a plate on the battery tray, the opposite side will have a similar plate that is held down by a bolt (in effect clamping the battery down). Undo this bolt (13mm?) and remove the plate.
    8. The battery should now be free to be removed from the car. (As far as I can think anyway)

Replacement is a reverse of removal but make sure the battery is firmly clamped down and the clamps round the battery terminals are tight but not overtightened as they are prone to breaking. Also coat the battery terminals in grease or vaseline while you are there as it stops them corroding

Car Parts Online, Spare Parts, Motor Spares from CarParts4Less.co.uk are just about the cheapest for quality batteries delivered to the door.
spend over £50 and get £5 off, spend over £75 and get £10 off.
A good quality Exide battery £51 delivered.

Exide Volkswagen Excell Battery 027 3 Year Guarantee | Car Parts 4 Less UK

Or about the best battery you could get a Bosch s5 for £61 delivered

Bosch Volkswagen S5 Battery 075 5 Year Guarantee | Car Parts 4 Less UK

Check the site with your number plate to make sure I have selected the correct battery.
