MK 4 - Leaky passenger door and wet foot well

    Afternoon all

How are you? I hope you are well.

I have posted about this before but I can't find there thread because I haven't been on here for a few weeks.

Anyway - I have a wet foot well in my MK4 5 door, passenger foot well. the last time I posted about this I seem to remember someone saying that it was something to do with a blocked drain in the door or something. I also remember them saying how to sort. Trouble is I can't now find that info so i'm back to square one.

As a reminder, I have found that the carpets and mat in the passenger side well are soaked. I have pulled the carpet up and can't fit any obvious holes in the floor, i think it might be an issue with the door seals perhaps - i'm not sure.

    Any ideas?

    Chris Walton

    Do you have a sunroof?
    Is it front or rear?

If its a Mk4 its from a time where similar aged VAG models suffered with the seals on the rear doors. If rear then it might be worth checking the rubbers and make sure they're intact.
If front it might be that run-off tube on the nearside is blocked. Can easily be sorted by rodding through but BE CAREFUL- if you use excessive force you'll push the tube from where it attaches to the drain and you'll end up with water coming through your headlining.
Could also be caused by a slightly irregular fit windscreen where the sealant has broken down. I had the latter on my mk2 which was awash with water at times. Look at the above first but the windscreen could be the answer if all else fails.

    HI Sparks

    Thanks for the reply.

I should have clarified. the issue is Front Passenger side, I don't have a sunroof. I haven't noticed any of the side lining being wet, it's just the floor from what I can see at the moment. That 'Rodding through' process you mention rings a bell from the last time I brought this up on here. what does it involve? are you aware of a youtube video which shows how to do it properly?

    Thanks

    Chris Walton.

Don't worry about the rodding then as it'll only apply to the sunroof run-off channels. Most likely your door rubber has failed- is the carpet damp up the side closest to the door or the bulk head?

Sometimes leaks have been traced to the bonnet release cable but i'm not sure what side this is on the Mk4

Had a similar problem with an Audi some years back. It is very likely a hole in the door seal rubber. The water travels inside the rubber to the joint which is normally at the bottom sill, then leaks out. Back then, the door seals where all black so turned it upside down which solved it. You can't with the Mk4 due to the cream finish at the top which blends in with the roof liner. Source a new seal.
